There are four main methods for preparing aluminum sol: organic saltwater hydrolysis, inorganic salt raw material method, powder dispersion method, and the widely used "aluminum hydrochloric acid" process in industry.
1. Organic saltwater hydrolysis: Organic aluminum salts (including isopropanol aluminum, secondary butanol aluminum, etc.) are hydrolyzed to form boehmite precipitates. The alcohols are stirred and evaporated, and then acid gum solvents are added to produce a stable aluminum sol.
Advantages: Mature process, capable of preparing high-purity aluminum sol, with larger specific surface area, uniform particle size distribution, and stable performance of the product
Shortcomings: Organic alkoxides have strong sensitivity and are prone to violent hydrolysis reactions to form precipitates. Additionally, organic alkoxides are flammable, toxic, and expensive, making it difficult to achieve industrial production
2. Inorganic salt raw material method: Using inorganic aluminum salts (such as AlCl3, Al (NO3) 3) and one or more of metal aluminum as raw materials, ammonia or other alkaline substances as precipitants, the aluminum salt undergoes hydrolysis reaction to generate precipitation, and then adding acidic adhesive solvent to adjust the pH of the precipitation to obtain
Advantages: The raw material price is cheap, the reaction process does not require heating, saves energy consumption, the entire process is easy to control, and has industrial production value
Shortcomings: The preparation cycle is long, and aluminum trichloride is used as the raw material, which is easy to absorb water and inconvenient for transportation
3. Powder dispersion method: Aluminum sol is prepared by mixing pseudo boehmite powder or aluminum oxide powder with acid adhesive solvent
Advantages: The entire process does not undergo chemical reactions, is easy to control, and has a short preparation cycle, simple operation, relatively stable sol process, low raw material price, easy storage, and can achieve industrial production
Shortcomings: The purity of industrial grade raw materials is not high, and the performance of the aluminum sol prepared is poor. After being placed for a period of time, agglomeration phenomenon may occur, and the stability needs to be further improved
4. Aluminum hydrochloric acid process: Metal aluminum and hydrochloric acid undergo multiple contact hydrolysis polymerization reactions to obtain aluminum sol
Advantages: Simple operation, good gel solubility of the prepared aluminum sol, meeting the requirements of industrial FCC catalyst binder
Shortcomings: The hydrogen generated during the preparation process poses safety issues, and due to the release of HCl gas during the process, it can corrode equipment, pollute the environment, and damage the crystal structure of the molecular sieve, leading to a decrease in catalyst activity
